Forecast for the mid-90s, the stars were aligned well enough to just set the alarm and not bother checking windmeters. Clear. Perfectly still flags at Cole and Overland. Standing up at Federal Way and Gowen Road; our little high pressure wind machine is still working.
At 7am, Jim V. told me it was 26-32 on the spillway, he was rigging a 6.0 and Betsy was on her way out with the usual 5.5. I went smaller in deference to COLD water, and my first reach on the 5.1 was just right... then there were the side lulls to deal with, with my unseasoned arms. Tiring. I couldn't point out of the wallow, so headed in for more power. By 8-something, the 6.9 was good, but there were still lulls to deal with, and my grip strength was puny.
The good news is that falling in had improved from near-paralyzing to just "refreshing."
Good opening day for me and Jim Tighe (on a 6.0), day 2 for Betsy, 4 or 5 kiters to fill the sky.
Next morning wind will have the lake up to the beach; it was a bit of trick getting down and up the rocks this morning.
Betsy's take:
"Wow! I thought about rigging a 5.0, but went with my usual 5.5
instead—big mistake. Could've used a smaller sail, board, and FIN
for the first half hour especially. Despite being massively overpowered
at first and forgetting my hood (leading to sudden brief ice-cream
headache after going under water, repeatedly), it was a wild and fun
morning. Tons of kites out - Steve L. was out from the first on his 12m,
in the big wind.... It backed off to 'normal' morning wind around 8:15
or 8:30, but Jim V. and I were too worked already to rerig and go back
out. Saw Jim T. out there too. The season is on!"
And Eddy added that he "was the last off the water at ~10 and it started to pick back up at 10:30... thought about going back out for more."
