Sailing Report
Betsy's report of the LP morning: We had a big group of windsurfers and kiters out having fun at Lucky Peak on Sunday morning. The clouds did come in, but it kept on blowing good 'til about 9. Everyone was pretty much on their regular gear, 5.5 for me.
Tony hit the trifecta:
I hope everyone found some wind to their liking today. I got 3 different lakes/ponds in today. I started out at luckypeak for a morning session, and Eddy, while you were putting your kite away, I got interviewed by channel 2. Hope they don't edit me out. Like to see my self on the news. Then later in the afternoon I drove to Wilson lake. It is at exit 188 off of 84, near the town of Eden. It really is a great setup for kiting as it has a nice beach with no trees and very soft sand. Best of all is that it has a huge grass area mowed for possible camping but even for this holiday weekend, it had no one in it. 4 kiters could easily set and launch at the same time and not be near each other. The only draw back for some would be that you have to be able to stay upwind as there is no beach downwind of the lauch area. The locals there were very friendly and even took a bunch of photos of me.
The evening ended with a stop at ICR on the way home for an hour of wind from 8 to 9. The wind was pretty light and I think that ICR is pretty much done for the year as it is so choked with weeds that only one quarter of the area is useable.
Chris Lee was there too, from 4 to 6:
It was a little board swapping exercise today: started off with 4.5 on my 74L wave board for the first half hour or so and then waited for 10 minutes for the wind to come back up after the dry thunder cloud moved through, sailed the 4.5 on the 100L slalom board for about 45 minutes, and then finished it off with the wave board again as the wind picked back up.The water seems lower and the weeds are still there.... I wonder how long IC will last. BTW, if you ever wonder, the wave fin do make a pretty good weed fin. :-)
Meanwhile, on the Columbia R... 12:00 noon, epic weekend at the gorge Kited in some of the smoothest air I have seen 14m, boosted huge stupid sick air some 40'ers. Sunday 3 mile canyon to windy for me to kit but there were a few guys out on 6 and 8m but I didn't see any jumps or tricks from these guys just pure survival. I windsurfed used a 3.7 it felt like a 7.5 in way too much wind. need a 3.2 or 3.0 my 75L board hung in there very well for being so overpowered. swells were over head high and were breaking. you could surf quit a ways before completing your jibe. didn't attempt any big air with gusts nearing 50 miles per hour.
attitude is everything Steve.
And Tom Cavaiani's Gorge report:
3 Mile went off on Sunday in a huge way. I don't know what is worse, waiting for the wind or not being able to sail because one does not have small enough gear. The prediction for Sunday was winds from 29 to 40 mph in the far east and the actual wind speeds exceeded that. The readings were consistently in the 30s with gusts over 50 mph.
Steve Linane and I sailed a the Wall in the morning from about 9 until noon. I started out on my 4.2, but switched to my 3.7 and had a blast until the wind became somewhat inconsistent around lunchtime. Steve was on a 4.5 and 4.0 during.
Jack and Penny Harrison were sailing at Roosevelt, so Steve called them for a wind report. After lunch we decided to drive out to 3 mile, since Jack indicated that the winds were more consistent. When we arrived, there were only a few people out because it was so windy. I rigged the 3.7 and went out for about 45 minutes. It was basically survival sailing, but still fun because the swells were huge and well shaped. After a short rest I went out again, but was too tired to do much more than just hang on. I came in and Steve used my rig, but about then the wind picked up a notch. We were both wishing we had 3.0 m sails. We waited until about 7 pm for the wind to back off, but it didn't happen. So we packed it up and headed home.
